Our celebration of the Baptism of the Lord invites us also to reflect on our own baptism, whether it was at last year’s Easter vigil or in our infancy. What was the significance of our baptism? I was baptized in the Catholic Church as an adult, and I saw it as the beginning of a journey. Faith in God was pretty new to me at that time, and it was exhilarating to look forward to growing in faith and knowledge, growing in relationship with God.
Today’s first reading describes it well: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.” My journey of faith has been an attempt to conform my ways and my thoughts to God’s ways and thoughts — admittedly with more success at some times than others. The journey continues, and I believe that God who has begun this good work will bring it to fruition.
