Staff report from the Catholic Voice

Twenty-six men and women, representing nine orders of priests, brothers and sisters, will be honored for years of service ranging from 25 to 75 during the Diocese of Oakland’s first observance of World Day of Consecrated Life on Feb. 6 at the Cathedral of Christ the Light, which is located at 2121 Harrison St. in Oakland.

Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone will be the principal celebrant at the 10 a.m. Mass. Those being recognized will be seated together in the cathedral, along with members of their religious communities who accompany them. During Mass, the men and women will be recognized as jubilarians and renew their professions. These jubilarians all live and work within the diocese.

A reception in the parish hall will follow the Mass.

World Day for religious grew out of a 1996 Synod of Bishops focused on consecrated life; the next year, Pope John Paul II instituted World Day for the Consecrated Life.

In his homily at the 1997 Mass, Pope John Paul II said: “For some time the feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple has brought together in diocesan communities the members of institutes of consecrated life and societies of apostolic life, to show God’s People the joy of unreserved commitment to the Lord and his kingdom. I wanted this experience to be extended to the whole Church, to give thanks to God for the great gift of consecrated life and to encourage ever greater gratitude and esteem for it.”
