Las Vegas Sisters and Associates are committed to promoting justice and ecological sustainability.

In early November a group of them planted over 200+ cactus and succulents to give to patrons at the Parish Holiday Bazaar.  While other venders were selling all their handy-work and craft items,  Holy Family was there at a table giving away free plants, prayer cards for “Sustaining God’s Creation,” and accepting donations to help with the expenses of the churches new eco-friendly landscaping.

Our mission for the weekend was to remind people that “we’re not born just to consume resources, to take up space, to eat, or to breathe.  We were made to add to life on Earth.”

The Sisters packaged 30 gift bags, to be sent down to Tijuana, MX, for a Christmas Party, being sponsored by a group of people from First Christian Church in Las Vegas.  They are helping put on the party for “Breaking Chains” orphanage (center).

“Breaking Chains” is a home for children rescued from Sex Slavery.  The rescued children are brought in, and are able to live there permanently and get educated.

Being true to the first Millennium Goal, of eradicating hunger and poverty, each week a gentleman that works at Trader Joe’s, brings the Sisters lots of food, vegetables, fruits and meats.  They rush around separating it, and distributing it as fast as possible, because of the meat, and need to keep it cold.

This week, three separate families benefited from it, and two senior residents.  Nevada Hand, a low income senior residence, was a recipient this week, and Associate Teresa DeRiso is helping sort and distribute it with her team of helpers.

In case life is not full enough,  Thursday evening they went to St. Viator’s Church to put gift tags on the Giving Tree.  A number of local charities receive Christmas gifts for their clients, and Heifer Project cards are also available on the tree.
